For several seconds, I stared at the blank screen, unable to understand how the man who had promised to hold my hand through childbirth could leave me at the exact moment I needed him most. Another contraction ripped through me, and a nurse hurried over with a wheelchair.

“Is someone coming?” she asked gently.I looked at the silent phone. “Not my husband.”

I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant, sitting alone outside the maternity ward with one hand pressed against my stomach while warm fluid soaked through my dress. Rowan had spent months promising he would be there.

But his mother, Selina, had decided her sixtieth birthday dinner was a “once-in-a-lifetime family event.”

Apparently, the birth of our son was not important enough.

I called Rowan again, desperate enough to give him one last opportunity. Music, laughter, and the sound of glasses clinking filled the background when he answered.

“Rowan, my water broke,” I said through another contraction. “The contractions are four minutes apart.”

Before he could answer, Selina’s voice came through the phone. “Tell her women have been giving birth for thousands of years.”

Rowan laughed.
