And by the following morning, my son would be standing on my doorstep, demanding to know what I’d done with every dollar.
But the biggest revelation came on Christmas Day, when I met someone at a community dinner who helped me understand the heartbreaking truth behind my family’s decision.
Part 1: The Christmas Invitation That Suddenly Disappeared
My name is Joanne Kessler. I’m sixty-two years old, and my husband, Walter, passed away two years ago.
We had been married for thirty-six wonderful years.
For most of our marriage, Christmas had been the happiest season in our home.
Walter adored everything about the holiday, especially handing out presents while wearing his ridiculous old Santa hat. He would announce each person’s name as dramatically as a hockey commentator introducing a star player.
Our grandchildren, ten-year-old Lily and seven-year-old Noah, absolutely loved it.
Even after Walter died, I tried to preserve those little traditions. Christmas was quieter without him, but spending the holiday with our son, Adam, his wife, Renee, and the children gave me something to look forward to.
At Thanksgiving, Adam had personally invited me.
“Same as last year, Mom. Come around noon on Christmas Day.”
