I had barely recovered from a brutal delivery when my husband looked at our newborn daughter, froze, and asked the one question I never expected to hear.
Ethan and I had been married for four years. The entire time, we had dreamed of having a child, but it just never happened. So when I found out I was finally pregnant, I cried tears of joy.
“You and our little girl are my whole world,” he often whispered.
My pregnancy was such an incredible time.
But the delivery was difficult. After 21 hours of labor, the monitors began screaming. A nurse pulled Ethan away while doctors rushed me down the hall.
“Please save them!” he shouted as the doors closed between us.
Yesterday, at 3:17 p.m., our daughter was born screaming — strong, healthy, perfect.
By the time I fully woke up, it was morning, and my little girl was sleeping beside me. God, I was so happy when I finally held her in my arms.
When visitors were finally allowed in, Ethan was the first to enter, a wide smile on his face.
“This is the happiest day of my life,” he said.
He bent over the bassinet, smiling — then suddenly went completely still.
His eyes moved over Lily’s face. The flowers slipped from his hand.
“What’s wrong?” I whispered.
Ethan stared at me as if I were a stranger.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
My stomach tightened.
“Tell you what?”
His voice cracked.
“Look at this child. Don’t you see it? Don’t you understand what you’ve done?”
I pulled Lily against my chest. Her skin was warm and pink, her breathing soft and steady. She was completely normal.
“She’s your daughter!” I cried. “What are you accusing me of?”
A tear slid down Ethan’s cheek. He dropped into the chair beside my bed as though the truth had knocked the strength from his legs.
“There’s something you need to know,” he whispered. “I was afraid to tell you, but I can’t hide it anymore.”
But before he could finish, the hospital room door swung open.
My bl00d turned to ice when I saw who walked in.
