The nurse stopped close enough to the doorway that he had to understand she wasn’t confused about what he was doing.

“Move,” he said to her, almost under his breath. “You’re making this worse.”
She didn’t answer the accusation.
Instead, she turned her head toward me without taking her eyes completely off him.
“Do you still want to leave this room?”
“Yes.”
My husband laughed again, but there was less humor in it now.
